brief introduction
Aleo is a pioneering developer platform that enables users to build private, scalable, and cost-effective applications. Through zero knowledge encryption, it moves smart contract execution off chain, creating a private decentralized application that can process thousands of transactions per second. Aleo combines the flexibility of Ethereum with a more efficient architecture, reducing the need for miners to rerun each transaction and focusing solely on verification.

The Aleo project was officially established in 2019 by Howard Wu, Michael Beller, Collin Chin, and Raymond Chu. The team is composed of world-class cryptographers, engineers, designers, and operators from companies such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook, as well as research universities such as the University of California, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins University, New York University, and Cornell University.
Aleo’s core founder Howard Wu received a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics and a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. At Berkeley, Howard also helped establish one of the top university blockchain clubs. After graduation, Howard worked at Google for a year, researching distributed systems, Aleo ASIC, Maxsayss, or ZKtaoma, but soon returned to Berkeley to pursue a master’s degree in electrical engineering and computer science, focusing on zero knowledge proofs.
He has contributed to the cryptographic libraries used for Ethereum and Zcash, collaborated closely with many renowned scholars from Berkeley, Cornell, and other institutions on zero knowledge proof research, and co authored the groundbreaking paper “Zexe: Implementing Decentralized Private Computing”. He is also a managing partner of DeKrypt Capital.
Inflation and mining rewards
In addition to the tokens initially allocated to the Aleo team, early supporters, and community members, a portion will be retained for wider distribution after the mainnet launch. The purpose of expanding allocation this time is to further decentralize governance, improve the standards of the open source community, and comply with relevant legal frameworks.
Early adopters of the internet will benefit from Aleo’s inflation plan, which aims to rapidly enhance network security. To achieve this goal, we implemented a relatively high initial inflation rate, followed by two halvings in the first decade. This method ensures both network security and economic stability.
Allocation and decentralization
As time goes by and Aleo’s credit limit increases, the allocation model will continue to evolve. Please refer to Table 3 for the detailed allocation of Aleo credit limits based on the provided block rewards. Please note that this statement only considers the impact of inflation and does not take into account any potential actions by initial holders who may choose to sell their tokens. Therefore, the actual token allocation may be more extensive than the simplified illustration provided
Aleo chose to adopt a variant of proof of work instead of alternative consensus mechanisms such as proof of stake, which has significant advantages in wider token allocation, especially in the early stages of network development. From the beginning, the Aleo network will operate without heavily relying on the Aleo core team, emphasizing decentralized control. This approach follows the established path of other blockchain platforms successfully achieving scalability and strong network security.
It is worth noting that our model is slightly different from traditional proof of work systems, but the differences are significant. In necessary proof of work frameworks like concise proof of work, the generated proofs are truly useful computations, rather than arbitrary puzzles designed solely for selecting winning miners. Therefore, in this situation, the incremental energy consumption associated with mining activities is significantly reduced, as the work performed is essentially necessary for verifying state changes.
