On January 17th, Megan Barbero, Chief Legal Officer and General Counsel of the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), will resign next week, joining the wave of departures from senior officials of the agency who have been responsible for legal battles against the cryptocurrency industry over the past few years.
Regarding Barbero’s resignation, SEC Chairman Gary Gensler stated in a statement that “her thoughtful advice and judgment are crucial to the committee’s decisions.” Barbero’s resignation is scheduled for January 20th, coinciding with the inauguration of US President elect Donald Trump.
Barbero is the Chief Legal Officer of the agency, responsible for how the legal department handles disputes with cryptocurrency companies in federal courts and provides advice on its enforcement stance. From February 2023, she will serve as the General Counsel.
Gurbir Grewal, the enforcement officer of the SEC, resigned in October, while Paul Munter, the accounting officer in charge of the agency’s controversial cryptocurrency accounting policies, announced his impending departure this week.
